Nutrition

Living a healthy lifestyle takes more than exercise.  It's also about fueling your body correctly.  With the proper nutrition kids learn better, adults perform at a higher level in their jobs, potential diseases are held at bay, doctor visits decrease and overall health increases.  That's a great benefits package!  We don't believe in fad diets.  We believe in lifestyle choices when it comes to food that increases performance and your chance at a longer, healthier life enjoyed with friends and family.  If you want more details about any of the information below, call the YMCA at (806) 293-8319 or send us an email.

Salsa, Sabor y Salud

Salsa, Sabor y Salud builds on the rich traditions and values of Hispanic and Latino cultures to help families adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles. Families participate in eight weekly group sessions that help
them learn about making healthier food choices and incorporating physical activity into their routines. Each week features a different theme incorporating traditional Hispanic and Latino culture.

Salsa, Sabor y Salud's curriculum is designed to help Hispanic families with children 12 and under make healthy choices for eating and incorporate activity into their daily lives, getting the whole family involved. It's
based on four messages:

  * Eat from all food groups every day
  * Be sensible about portions
  * Be physically active every day
  * Take small steps for success

The program is offered in partnership with the National Latino Children's Institute (NLCI) and Kraft Foods, and addresses the growing obesity rates and inactivity levels among Latino children in America. Designed by Latinos for Latinos, Salsa, Sabor y Salud was the first national program of its kind designed to encourage healthy lifestyles among Latino families. Kraft Foods and National Latino Children's Institute (NLCI) launched the program in 2003, and together with the YMCA continue to bring the program to additional communities.
